Opposing mechanisms mediate morphine-and cocaine-induced generation of silent synapses
Published in Nature Neuroscience, 2016
This to work that demonstrated that cocaine experience triggers synaptogenesis in D1-type MSNs, while morphine triggers synaptic elimination in D2-type MSNs, resulting in the same net shift in the balance of excitation to D1- and D2-type MSNs in the NAc.

A feedforward inhibitory circuit mediated by CB1-expressing fast-spiking interneurons in the nucleus accumbens
Published in Neuropsychopharmacology, 2017
This work characterizes the local inhibitory synaptic transmission arising from fast-spiking interneurons (FSIs) and local axon collaterals from MSNs within the NAc, which provide feedforward and lateral inhibition, respectively.

Silent synapses dictate cocaine memory destabilization and reconsolidation
Published in Nature Neuroscience, 2019
This work demonstrated that the silencing and re-maturation of cocaine-generated synapses underlies the natural destabilization and reconsolidation of cocaine-associated memories following memory reactivation.

CREB binding at the Zfp189 promoter within medium spiny neuron subtypes differentially regulates behavioral and physiological adaptations over the course of cocaine use
Published in Biological Psychiatry, 2023
these findings point to the CREB-Zfp189 interaction within the NAc Drd2+ neurons as a molecular signature of chronic cocaine use that is causal in counteracting the reinforcing effects of cocaine.
